Pennsylvania is known for high quality – great color Black Cherry wood and when I purchase these logs I look for North Central wood with good red color. Cherry is a popular wood for shelves due to its warm color tones and tight grain – its live-edge offers some character but is typically uniform – straight. We usually have a good cherry wood slab inventory so custom sizes and of quantities are not a problem.

Wild Cherry / Black Cherry: Heartwood is a light pinkish brown when freshly cut, darkening to a medium reddish brown with time and upon exposure to light. Sapwood is a pale yellowish color. The grain is usually straight with the exception of figured pieces with curly grain patterns. Has a fine, even texture with moderate natural luster.

Finish: All ZimBoard Floating Shelves are smooth sanded and professionally sprayed with a clear coat catalyzed varnish leaving a durable natural smooth matt finish.

Bracket: Brackets are 2” shorter than width of shelf - Hidden Bracket shelf has a 1.5” back-plate with 2, 3, or 4 welded posts, fastener holes drilled every 4”.

What to expect: You should expect to receive a high quality professionally made shelf. We purchase our own logs, saw them, dry them and select boards offering desired wood character and color – grain and natural imperfections that add interest and beauty. Our shelves are handmade by third generation Lancaster County skilled wood crafters – our steel brackets are handmade by a local metalsmith. You should expect to receive a high quality shelf that is made of solid, single-board (not glued pieces of wood) native Pennsylvania Hardwood.  

Installation: Each shelf comes with an installation handbook – the solid 2” board can be heavy and awkward especially in longer lengths and may require a 2 person installation. Our design offers easy installation – the shelf bracket is completely hidden from view once installed.

The Hidden Shelf Bracket is made of ¼” cold rolled steel with welded ¾” mounting posts the shelf slides onto. Pre-drilled fastener holes are drilled on the top of the brackets back plate every 4” allowing cross-over of wall studs – additional holes may drilled. Simple installation includes: selecting install position, locating wall studs (bracket must be fastened to a solid wood wall stud or masonry), drill screw pilot holes, mount bracket, level bracket, then fasten with supplied screws. Bracket must be solidly fasten to at least 2 wall studs.
